2008 Corporate Reporting System Available
The 2008 corporate reporting system is now available. In the Comptroller's efforts to continuously improve services for taxpayers, the reporting system has been updated for tax year 2008. After receiving taxpayer feedback, in conjunction with experience gained in the first year of the reporting requirements, we have taken steps ensure the system is more user friendly and efficient.

The Comptroller's Office has over 787,000 unclaimed property accounts worth more than $795 million including 54,000 new listings. Check to see if your name is on our list.

Numerous unclaimed property items from abandoned safe deposit boxes held by the Comptroller's Office are now being auctioned on eBay. New offerings are available every week.

Tax Amnesty Information

The Maryland General Assembly passed a law during the last legislative session creating a tax amnesty program. From September 1 - October 30, eligible delinquent taxpayers can come forward to satisfy their tax debts with all the civil penalties and half of the interest waived. No amnesty applications will be accepted before or after the deadline. More information will be available shortly.

No Sales Tax Holiday in Maryland This Year
The Maryland General Assembly did not pass any legislation this year authorizing a tax free shopping period in 2009. There will be a tax free week in 2010 on clothing and footwear $100 or less. The 2010 Sales Tax Holiday is scheduled for August 8, 2010 through August 14, 2010. A tax free weekend is also planned for energy star products February 19-21, 2011.

Board of Revenue Estimates Announces Revised FY 2009 Figures
After reviewing the current economic outlook and recent revenue collections, the Board of Revenue Estimates adopted revised general fund revenue estimates at its March 11 meeting.



New Regulations for Tax Preparers
Under a new bill recently signed into law, all persons offering individual tax preparation services must become licensed with the State Board of Individual Tax Preparers by June 1, 2010. Tax preparers seeking additional information are encouraged to visit the Dept. of Labor, Licensing & Regulation Web site.

Comptroller Franchot Hosts Tour of Agency’s Motor Fuel Testing Laboratory

Annapolis, Md. (June 24, 2009) - With the peak of summer travel season approaching and gas prices steadily on the rise, Comptroller Peter Franchot lead a tour of the Motor Fuel Testing Laboratory in Jessup today and participated in a live analysis of gasoline samples to highlight the agency’s efforts to protect consumers at the pump. The samples used in the analysis were gathered earlier today at a station near the lab. As Comptroller, Franchot is the state’s chief regulator of all petroleum products.

Comptroller’s Agents, Prince George’s County Police Seize Nearly 400 Cases of Bootleg Beer

Annapolis, MD (June 18, 2009) - Emphasizing his commitment to protecting Maryland businesses and consumers, Comptroller Peter Franchot today joined with the Prince George’s County Police Department to announce the recent confiscation of approximately 400 cases of beer worth nearly $10,000 from two Prince George’s County businesses.

Franchot Reminds Marylanders “Patriotism is Tax- Free”

ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 11, 2009) - On the verge of Flag Day (June 14), Comptroller Peter Franchot today reminded consumers and businesses that American, Maryland and POW/MIA flags are exempt from Maryland's 6 percent sales tax. The exemption can be found under the Tax-General Article of the Maryland Code, Section 11-205.

Unclaimed Property Listing Reunites More Than 8,000 Marylanders with Lost Money

ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 5, 2009) -Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced that more than 8,000 individuals have been reconnected with lost money and other valuables after his office released a 128-page advertising supplement recently. The list of 54,000 individuals with more than $38 million in unclaimed property appeared in 25 newspapers throughout the state.

More Than $38 Million Up for Grabs in 2009

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (May 19, 2009) - Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced that his office will issue a 128-page advertising supplement over the next three weeks to find 54,000 recently identified owners of more than $38 million in unclaimed funds. The supplement will appear in 25 newspapers throughout the state, beginning today and running through Thursday, June 4.

Franchot Returns More Than $26K at OC SpringFest

ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 11, 2009) - Representatives from Comptroller Peter Franchot’s unclaimed property unit visited Ocean City’s SpringFest this past weekend, reuniting 37 people with more than $26,000 in unclaimed funds. Comptroller employees were on hand to assist fairgoers Thursday, May 7 through Sunday, May 10 as part of a statewide initiative to help reunite Marylanders with money they are owed. Attendees were able to check Comptroller files for their names to see if they had any unclaimed property with one lucky person finding
