Comptroller Schaefer Announces Reprieve for Individual State Tax Returns

Massachusetts State Holiday to Give Marylanders Extra Day to File

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 28, 2006)—Comptroller William Donald Schaefer today announced that Maryland taxpayers will have until Tuesday, April 18, 2006, to file their state tax returns or pay any taxes due. By law, if a filing or payment deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, taxpayers can timely satisfy any tax obligations by the next business day.

This year, April 15 falls on a Saturday. Monday, April 17, is a state holiday in Massachusetts, and the IRS now directs Maryland taxpayers to send their federal returns to the agency’s Andover, Mass., processing center. As a result, Marylanders will also have the extra day for their state returns.

“Even though Marylanders have an extra day to send in their returns, it really serves them better to file as early as possible, and to file electronically,” said Comptroller Schaefer. “The sooner you get it done, the sooner we can process your return and issue you a refund. Even if you owe this year, e-file early and direct debit your payment. You can still pay your taxes by April 18.”

To avoid confusion, all individuals in Maryland will get the extra day to file their state returns even if they are instructed to send federal returns or payments to a location other than Andover, Mass. Pass-through entity income tax returns (Form 510) must still be filed by Monday, April 17, 2006. Fiscal year corporate returns due April 15 will also be required to be filed by Monday, April 17.

The April 18 deadline applies to both electronically filed and paper submissions of:

  • 2005 Maryland individual income tax returns, including fiduciaries (Forms 502, 503, 504, 505 and 515),
  • Requests for an automatic six-month, filing extension,
  • Tax year 2005 balance due payments,
  • Individual estimated tax payments for the first quarter of 2006, and
  • Individual refund claims for tax year 2002 where the regular three-year statute of limitations expires this year.

The state of Massachusetts annually commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord on each third Monday in April. The battles began the American Revolution in 1775.
