Comptroller Franchot Says "It's the Final Countdown"

ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 3, 2007) - Comptroller Franchot reminded taxpayers today that the April 17 tax deadline is less than two weeks away. He urged taxpayers not to panic and offered a few helpful reminders for last-minute filers.

"I encourage everyone filing a Maryland tax return this year to use iFile, the state's free Internet filing system. It's safe, fast and convenient. Best of all, iFilers getting a refund who chose direct deposit can expect it in their bank accounts within 48 hours after processing."

Filers with a balance due can hold onto their money a bit longer this year thanks to a new initiative. Taxpayers who electronically file their 2006 state return by the April 17 deadline, and choose direct debit or credit card payment, have until April 30 to pay the balance in full.

Additional helpful tips for making tax time easy include:

  • Check, then re-check, bank account/routing numbers before submitting tax returns.
  • If paper filing is a must, print clearly. Don't use pencil.
  • Make sure to include all required forms and documents (e.g. W-2s), and don't forget to sign your paper return.

Free, state tax assistance is available at all of the agency's 12 taxpayer service offices, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extra hours of assistance will also be provided on Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., and on Tuesday, April 17, from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Taxpayers can also download state tax forms, find helpful information and even check on the status of their state refund when visiting the Comptroller's Web site at www.marylandtaxes.com. Taxpayers can also call 1-800-MD TAXES for free state tax help Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. through April 20.
