ANNAPOLIS, Md. (April 4, 2007) - The Board of Public Works today announced the approval of $8.1 million in Program Open Space funding for acquisition and recreation enhancement projects across Montgomery County.
"I am proud to have voted for the approval of these important projects which will enhance the quality of life we enjoy," said Comptroller Peter Franchot. "I am committed as Comptroller to protecting our state's parklands and open spaces and will continue to advocate for programs which will make Maryland the greenest state in the nation."
Among the county projects that received the board's approval today was $3.5 million to purchase the 90-acre Spurrier Farm, which will add on to the 700 acres presently protected at the Rachel Carson Conservation Park. In addition, the board also approved a $3.2 million to buy an additional 60 acres for the Little Bennett Regional Park, increasing its total size to more than 3,800 acres. Finally, the county will receive $1.4 million for renovation of the Wheaton Tennis Bubble.
Chaired by Governor Martin O'Malley, the Board of Public Works also includes Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy Kopp.
